Parents Can Help, Too!
- Encourage your child to ask questions but be sure to answer them. Don’t be afraid of not always having the answers; learn with your child.
- Listen to your child. Provide listening experiences. (sounds, music, stories). Give time for reflection, thought.
- Offer your child the opportunity to make choices and decisions, check to be sure he/she”follows through”.
- Help your child to follow simple directions to work and play independently.
- Encourage your child to develop responsibility and to use his/her initiative.
- Help your child to improve small muscle coordination by providing toys, crayons, scissors, clay, etc. for use.
- Help your child improve large muscle coordination by using balls, jump rope, careful use of play equipment and wheel toys.
- Provide “reading” opportunities.
· Discuss pictures…encourage your child to tell what he/she sees and what is happening.
· Read and tell stories to your child.
· Have him/her retell a story or parts of the story. i.e. the funny part, the end, etc.
· Take a trip to the library to “find out” something.
· Search in books to find information; “research” to find details.
· Encourage proper care of books.
· Explain that each book has an author and illustrator.
- Encourage your child to bring books to school and tell the story on sharing day.
- Please help your child learn and remember their telephone number and address.
